This concept enables one to overcome and sucessfully treat a hypothermic condition hypothermia-disaster-hypertermia Hypothermia is a physiological state in the human body defined as 35 degrees Celsius or less. (Normal body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius). Any cause of temperature fall in the body below this threshold will rapidly cause shivering, drowsiness, sluggish body movements and mental impairment. If the temperature continues to fall – there will most certainly be severe organ damage –and eventually death. In worst case scenario a fatal outcome can be only minutes away.

With regards to the causes of hypothermia, it is not only something that happens at night, in cold climates, water or wind chill. In fact, the most common causes are due to trauma damage to the individual. This may be a broken leg, a blow to the head, a fall injury, blast injury or shock – and most certainly when severe bleeding occurs. In fact, all the latest studies with regards to trauma/damage to American military personell (and all other human beings, of course) in warm climates show that even with a high outdoors temperature – soldiers lose temperature when injured. This is a natural reaction – and the loss of core heat when injured or shocked – is well known to all doctors and physiologists.

Unfortunately, the problem until now has been to deliver heat to the human body to increase the body temperature after injury in a manner that is efficient. There has been little success with external heating, like a ’Bear hugger’, or heatet blankets or sleeping-bags that produce heat by chemical reactions. This increases the skin temperature – allowing blood flow to the periphery of the body- potentially worsening the state temporarily.

Studies from several parts of the world have shown over time that the most efficient way of getting the core temperature back to normal as soon as possible is by warmed intravenous fluid. Although this is painful, it is certainly life-saving, and will minimize severity of any injury. (With the exception when one wants to cool down tissue in major brain, heart and kidney trauma – but this is highly sophisticated medicine in major hospitals/casualty units with specialised surgeons).

On the other end of the scale – overheating of the body is certainly also dangerous and potentially fatal – and is extremely frequent amongst soldiers and people living in warm climates. Hyperthermia is a major cause for occupying hospital beds and field strechers – and ties up a lot of health personnel that could be doing other, more important tasks. The only treatment for this is intravenous administration of fluid to balance the fluid loss- causing the fatigue from a hyperthermic state. Needless to say, if the intravenous fluid is cooled down – this will regulate the core temperature of the body faster. Hence, the patient will recover more quickly and spend less time in a hospital bed/strecher.

This is why the Infuplus bag and Infubox are unique. The Infubag allows cooled or warmed fluids to be stable during intravenous administration- with a minimal of temperature loss. It is also designed so that it can be carried by the patient/soldier themselves with minimal effort. The Infubox is a precise instrument for temperature regulation – that allows the temeperature in the fluid to be accurately cooled/warmed to less than 0.5 degrees within minutes. Therefore, one will be ready to handle both hypo- and hyperthermic states within minutes of each other.
